How SpellCamp Works

A deep dive into our AI-powered spelling practice system designed to help children master spelling through personalized, adaptive learning.

Getting Started

Setting Up for Success

Important Setup Tips
  • Use headphones for the best audio experience
  • Find a quiet space for practice
  • Set aside regular practice time (10-15 minutes daily is ideal)
  • Have a parent or guardian nearby for initial setup

SpellCamp uses audio to help children learn the correct pronunciation of words. We use high-quality text-to-speech technology to provide clear, consistent pronunciation of both individual words and example sentences.

Our Spaced Repetition System

SpellCamp uses a scientifically-proven spaced repetition system to help students learn and retain spelling words effectively. This system is based on the principle that we learn best when we review information at increasing intervals.

How It Works

Initial Learning

New words are introduced frequently to build initial familiarity.

Gradual Spacing

As proficiency increases, review intervals become longer.

Our algorithm adapts to each student's performance:

  • Words spelled correctly with confidence are reviewed less frequently
  • Challenging words appear more often
  • The system responds to both successes and mistakes

Understanding Mastery Levels

SpellCamp tracks progress through six distinct mastery levels, providing clear feedback on learning progress.

Mastered (≥90% accuracy over 10+ attempts)

The highest level of achievement, indicating consistent, reliable spelling of the word.

Approaching Mastery (≥80% accuracy, 8+ attempts)

Very good performance with just a few more successful attempts needed for full mastery.

Emerging Mastery (≥80% accuracy, <8 attempts)

Strong initial performance but needs more practice to confirm consistency.

Developing (60-80% accuracy, <5 attempts)

Making good progress but still needs regular practice.

Beginning (<60% accuracy)

Early stages of learning the word, requiring frequent practice.

Not Started (No attempts)

Word has been added but not yet practiced.

Practice Mode

While our spaced repetition system manages regular review sessions, Practice Mode allows students to get additional practice anytime they want, without affecting their scheduled reviews.

Smart Practice Selection

Our practice mode uses a sophisticated algorithm to select words based on:

  • Current mastery level (lower mastery words appear more frequently)
  • Recent performance (struggling words get more attention)
  • Time since last practice (keeps all words fresh)
Practice Mode Benefits
  • No pressure from scheduled reviews
  • Freedom to practice as much as desired
  • Maintains progress tracking
  • Perfect for extra practice before tests
